Meet Gary Vee,
Born in 1975 in Belarus, Gary Vaynerchuk moved to the US with his family. He grew up in Queens, New York, and then New Jersey, where his father owned a liquor store. In 1999, he began managing the store and eventually renamed it The Wine Library; by 2005, he claims, he had taken the turnover from $3m to $60m. In 2006, he started a Wine Library video show that ran for 1,000 episodes.
For those that haven’t heard of Gary Vee, you’re not only missing out but you may actually be losing in your business and entrepreneurship life. So why is this middle aged man so amazing and what can you learn from him? Below I have curated a list of the most important lessons I’ve learnt from Gary Vaynerchuk.
1. People are scared of change.
Gary talks about how people are very good at holding onto the past, being scared of progression. Having the fear of change can be very detrimental to your success, Gary articulates that having the mentality of how something can help and further you is the right mindset to figure out if that thing is worth your time or not. Gary said:
When most people see something new they think: “How is this going to hurt me?” and when I see something new I think: “How is this going to help me?” That mentality has been a game-changer for me, and every other entrepreneur, because we’re not scared to fail and we’re not scared to put in work.
2. Social media is a misconception.
When I first started watching Gary, he kept saying in his videos and interviews that social media is just a slang term for the current state of our internet now; at first, this had me confused and stumped as to what he actually meant by this. Then I realised that he was on the money, ‘social media’ has turned our life into something truly special, our mobile devices have turned into the new way of receiving our news, ordering a pizza and something that we can actually make money off.
Social media is just a slang term for the current state of the internet – the websites and apps that people consume on their mobile device.
3. Quit your J.O.B if it’s practical.
Gary is very invested in the 400 trillion to one statistic of being born, he continues to say that we have won the human lottery, so why waste your time here on earth. This is one of the biggest things I have ever taken from Gary, with my mum passing in her 20s I live by the fact you never know when your time is up. Doing what you love and investing in yourself is the ultimate way to winning the game of ‘life’.
It’s real to me. I don’t know how people can’t realise they’ve won the ultimate lottery, so why don’t I maximise my happiness while I have my time on Earth?
4. You’re going to die.
When questioned on his 3 most motivating words, he tells the world that you’re gonna die’ as simple as this statement is we can all learn from this, you have one life — you should live that life to the absolute max, don’t settle for mediocre. Gary is not a motivator he is just documenting his journey which has ‘motivated’ an abundance of people to do more be more and become more. Gary Vee is his side hustle and that is what he has on every other entrepreneur, he works smart and hard.
5.Work hard and smart.
So many entrepreneurs are told that they don’t have to work hard but they have to work smart; Gary articulates that he is winning because he works hard and smart. I believe if you work hard and smart then you can then make a huge ‘impact’ the universe will move out of the way.
If you haven’t seen Gary Vaynerchuk check him out, he will change your life.
